Winter 2010 Week 1

Hello Everyone!

Welcome back! I hope we're all ready for the New Year and winter quarter.  Thanks to all of you that made it to our meeting tonight.  It got switched to inside of Price Center because Perk's closed at 8pm.  We will have a better spot next week!

More fun with Jamnesty!
  • Date pushed back to January 30th
  • Because of the push back, bands that we had settled on can no longer make it so we need to get bands by this week in order to finish all the TAP information - This is a job for anyone interested in reaching out to local bands.
  • Kathryn to make up a flyer for the concert and will add in information later and also email organizations on campus to begin coalition building and find co-sponsors.
Next week we'll be planning the second installment of the human rights film series scheduled for January 14th.  We will get more information from Anjuli and proceed with that at our meeting.

Really the most important thing this week is to FIND BANDS for January 30th!  As soon as a band says yes, we still have some paperwork and faxing to do to get it secured so let Lauren know when a band is scheduled so we can go forward with that.

Awesome, I hope to see more of you next week because it's going to be a great quarter!

Winter Updates 2009

Hello Amnesty Friends!

I hope you're all having a fantastic winter break!

Just want to keep you updated on a few things going on next quarter.

-Our meetings will be held on Mondays at 8 PM! Our first meeting will take place on first week. I'll get back to everyone as soon as I know the location. Pencil it in!

-Once again, Jamnesty has been postponed. It will be taking place on January 30th. This is not due to a failure on our part. The UCSD administration are ridiculous!!!
-Our band is most likely Social Green and we'll keep looking for a small
band to open for them. I'll keep you updated on this.
- We need to start advertising and coalition building ASAP. If you have
been assigned this task, winter break is a great time to start.
-THANK YOU for your help this quarter!

-We'll be having another Guantanamo film screen event this quarter, and Anjuli will get back to you all with the details. It will be a different film

-I've been contacted about helping out with an event on female genital mutilation, so if the topic interests you, please let me know!

That's it for now! Thank you all again for your help this quarter! It was great working with old friends and meeting new ones! Take care, and have a GREAT winter break! whoooo hooo no studying!

Happy Holidays!

Lauren

Week 10 - Fall 09

Hi Everyone!

Thank you to everyone that made it to the meeting tonight. I'm very excited to say that Jamnesty is coming together really well! The TAP form is completed, and we just have the performace agreements to complete in the next two weeks! We have some great bands lined up and our event should be AMAZINGGGG!

Once we finish everything this quarter, we'll need to start advertising!!!! Please keep in touch this winter break and be sure to bring your friends and notify your other orgs! We'll be updating you regularly with our information, so stay tuned!

Good luck studying for finals everyone! Thank you for your help this quarter, and I'm looking forward to working with you again next year!

P.S. If you have not filled out the meeting wizard yet, please do! I will most likely be picking a time tomorrow, so the sooner the better!

Lauren

Week 7 - Fall 09

Hey Everyone,

It is DEFINITELY crunch time. We have less than one month until the event!!!!!!!! I applied for funding, and hopefully we'll get our amount from AS, because we need to start working on the specifics!

If you are assigned to do, PLEASE do it or let us know if you're too busy so we can cover for you. It is absolutely crucial at this point if we are to have a successful event.

REMEMBER - Jamnesty is taking place the first weekend we get back to school!!!

First off:

BANDS!!!!! - we NEED to get our bands this week, so we can fill out our performance contracts.
Adrianne - check out Loft to find artists
Kate - Go to Porter's to look for reggae bands
Gus - Work on finding bands via internet.

COALITION BUILDING - We need to contact other student orgs to get them involved. It's important to get them involved so we have increased attendance and publicity!
-Kathryn: contact students orgs that would be interested
-Kate: Get the frats involved

HOOKAH - Emma - they can be co-sponsors, call me: my number is (909) 214-8577

FOOD - It's not crucial, so if people want food they can purchase it at porters

ART - Anjuli - please let me know what the photographers will provide, I applied for money to frame the prints, but I'm not sure if AS will fund it.

BOX OFFICE - Since the bands wont be big, we'll sell the tickets at the door

Security - Applied for funding but still need to reserve the security

OK guys! That's about it. I'm meeting with the advisors this week to discuss everything, so hopefully it will work out! Remember, Christmas break DOES NOT count in terms of our timeline!!!! That means we have this week, tenth week, and finals to sort things out!

See you at the meeting on Thursday,

Lauren

Week 5 - Fall 08

Last week, our co-hosting of "My Guantanamo Diaries" was a great success. Mahvish Rukhsana Khan, author of the book by the same title, was an eye-opening and inspiring speaker. Many new Amnesty members made their first action for human rights, a letter to close Guantanamo Bay.

We're preparing a symposium on women's rights for next quarter. It's a while from now, but keep the evening of January 22nd open. Also, if you're interested in helping out with the planning, Amnesty International meets every Wednesday at 5:30 at Perk's coffee.

Next week, Doctors Without Borders is presenting a "Refugee Camp" exhibit at Balboa Park. From November 6th until the 9th, they will walk participants through the experience of displaced people around the world.

Separately, an ally organization, Students Take Action Now: Darfur, is hosting an evening of Global Food Appreciation, similar to the Oxfam Hunger Banquet. It will be an intense workshop on the subject of poverty from many points of view. Together, the group will explore possible solutions we can enact immediately and longer term goals. Many Amnesty members will be there, so please join us next Wednesday, Nov 5th at the Cross Cultural Center small conference room, promptly at 6:30.
